village. Therefore, they decided to leave the village at the late midnight to avoid being seen by the villagers. They thought that late midnight would be the best suited time as the villagers would be in deep sleep.

So, as decided by the seven brothers at late midnight, they walked out slowly one by one, hiding from the villagers. They got together at a pre-decided place and safely proceeded to their onward journey. No villager was able to see them moving out. After covering a sufficient distance, they found a river valley. Due to summer, theriver was flowing in scattered streams with a few parallel sand strips in between. The depth of flowing water was hardlykneetowaistdeep.Ithadonlywhitesandonitsbed. So, it was shining due to it being a full Moon night which really looked to them as if water was flowing in whole of the river. They felt unsafe in swimming across the river. Therefore, before going into the river, they decided to hold each other’s hands tightly to prevent them from drowningorbeingswept awayin theriver. Sooner they came out, the brothers wanted toconfirmas to whether all of the seven brothers hadcrossed the river or not? So what they did was they allstood in a line, and one came out of the line to count the number of brothers. He counted one, two, three, four, five and six but did not count himself. The brothers were shocked at the loss of one brother. They were very sad. He again repeated the count in the same manner and counted only six.
